Sunday Service, April 27: "Terminator Seeds: Issues of Justice and Sustainability" – Kate Green, Omar Gallardo & Nilda Martinez
Speakers from USC Canada, Kate Green (Ottawa), Omar Gallardo and Nilda Martinez (Honduras), will reflect on issues related to the ownership and use of seeds. They will examine challenges to the global moratorium on Terminator Seeds and share stories of how farmers' movements have opposed this technology to preserve their rights to save and plant seeds from their harvests.
This is Hunger Sunday. Bring gifts for the Food Bank.
USC Sunday, April 27th
Guests from USC Canada and two of their Honduran partners will be joining us on April 27th. In support of USC's work with "programs, training and policies that strengthen biodiversity, food sovereignty, and the rights of those at the heart of resilient food systems," all undesignated contributions in the offering will go to USC. USC envelopes will be available for those who wish to write a cheque.

STAINLESS STEEL WATER BOTTLES
First Unitarian is selling stainless steel water bottles for $17.00 as a fundraiser. If you are tired of plastic bottles and want to purchase one, give your name to Frances Deverell by Sunday, April 25th. She will have an order of bottles delivered to the Fellowship in a few Sundays.
EMPTY BOWLS PROJECT
Each year, UU congregations across Canada collect money in an empty bowl for local charities in the city of the host of the Canadian Unitarian Council Annual Conference. Ottawa will be the host on May 16-18, and the Ottawa Food Bank and the Ottawa School Breakfast Program have been selected to receive any money collected.
Our empty bowl comes from the UU congregation in Edmonton, and can be found on a back table after the service. Please consider putting a donation into the bowl for these worthy causes.

May 4: "Our Cosmic Mother"
Using visual images and stories from as long as 40,000 years ago we will rediscover the meaning of Queen of Heaven, our cosmic mother. What makes a goddess a mother, and a mother a goddess? Why are so many people in the twenty-first century attracted to the ancient archetype of the divine feminine?

NEWS & EVENTS
COMMUNITY GARDEN PLOT PROJECT
The Community Garden Plot Project is seeking interested participants within the Fellowship and outside the Fellowship. The commitment would be for approximately two hours once every two weeks to do some weeding, watering, and picking of crops. Participants will work in pairs doing tasks they enjoy and can do. From May until the end of the gardening season. We understand people may have vacation plans to be away for more than two weeks but don't let that interfere with your participation if you are interested. Accommodation has been built into the program for this. In exchange participants may take some produce. As occurred last year, the remainder of the produce will go to shut-ins and the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard. Please contact Ron W. at friday.notes@uufo.org if you are interested.

The Fellowship will have an information table at the LGX, a community fair for the LGBT community. More info to come.
Sunday, May 4, 12:30pm following service and a light lunch – GLBTT CONCERNS in CANADA TODAY – Welcoming Congregation Workshop #4
Please sign-up so we can confirm numbers for lunch (which will include vegan options). Child care can be provided with prior notice.
Join us for this panel session that concludes the workshop series of the UUFO's "Welcoming Congregation" initiative. It's an opportunity for congregation members to inform themselves about the main preoccupations of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) people today. In this post-marriage environment, homophobia, biphobia and transphobia continue to exist but where does the LGBT community channel its efforts? Where can allies best support them?
Three guest speakers will share their thoughts on this panel. Wendy Ireland is the Project Coordinator of Around the Rainbow Project (www.around-therainbow.com), an initiative of Family Services Ottawa that aims to provide support to diverse Ottawa families. Prior to working with the Project, Wendy worked as an advocate, promoting healthy living for persons with disabilities. She is also a former board member of Capital Pride. The second panel member is D. Ryan Dyck, editor of The Caucus magazine published by Political, International and Development Studies students at the University of Ottawa. He's a former employee and current volunteer for Egale Canada, a national advocacy group for the LGBT community. Rounding out the panel is Ian McLeod, a member of the board of Pink Triangle Services, a social service agency serving GLBTTQ people in the National Capital Region. Ian has also served on the board of Capital Pride and worked as a freelance contributor for Capital XTRA.

Wednesday, May 7, 7:30pm – FILM & DISCUSSION: HIJACKED FUTURE
Venue: the Kuhns', 2451 Ogilvie Road
"Hijacked Future" is a documentary film that looks at the increasingly fragile base of our North American industrial food system in order to help us understand just what's at stake with our daily bread. It asks us to question the wisdom of a system precariously based on oil and corporate seeds while we're at the same time witnessing the impact of climate change. (More information in April Newsletter)
USC Canada was involved in the making of this film and we are showing it, in part, as a prelude to our Service on April 27 when members of USC Canada will be speaking on "Terminator Seeds: Issues of Justice and Sustainability."
Please register with Marilynn K. (friday.notes@uufo.org). If you would like to contribute small snacks for the evening – nuts, fruit, cookies – please contact Marilynn.

OUR LAST BOOK DISCUSSION OF THE YEAR: Conversations with God by Neale Donald Walsch
Led by Dave K. and Karen C.
Hosted by Dave K. and Ann C.
This book addresses most, if not all, of the questions we have ever asked about life and love, purpose and function, people and relationships, good and evil, guilt and sin, forgiveness and redemption, the path to God and the road to hell… everything. The truth is God talks to everybody, all the time. The question is always: Who is listening? There is an axiom: When you are ready your teacher will appear. Are you ready? If yes, this book is your teacher.
Please register with the leaders and/or Elinor Mueller (AdultPrograms@uufo.org). There will be sign-up sheets on Sundays.

EXERCISES FOR PEOPLE OVER 50
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side.
With a 5-lb potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can.
Try to reach a full minute, and then relax.
Each day you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer.
After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-lb potato sacks.
Then try 50-lb potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-lb potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.
In peace,
Martin D'Amours
